Conduct Disorder Treatment

Learn about conduct disorder

Adolescents with conduct disorder often experience significant impairment as a result of the behavioral and emotional problems associated with the disorder. Distinguished by impulsions to break rules or laws, damage property, instigate aggressive behavior, and act belligerent towards others, individuals suffering from this mental condition are often at risk of abusing drugs or alcohol, receiving disciplinary interventions at school, or getting in trouble with the law. Furthermore, those who do not receive treatment for conduct disorder are at an increased risk for suicide due to the fact that the symptoms can lead to devastating consequences and the development of other mental illnesses, such as depression.

At Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems in Lafayette, Louisiana, we realize that a teen or adolescent with conduct disorder can be challenging to parent and can bring about feelings of helplessness when trying to offer help. Parents want their adolescents to succeed and make good choices for the betterment of their future. Vermilion shares this goal and offers programming geared towards assisting patients and their families in achieving recovery and relief from symptoms of conduct disorder. Through the implementation of compassionate, individualized, comprehensive and high-quality care for those suffering from mental illnesses and substance use problems, Vermilion places significant focus on fostering each patient’s social, emotional, and mental wellness in a safe and therapeutic environment. With ongoing support, family involvement, and variety of treatment options conducive to healing, Vermilion’s treatment clinic is the solution to your teen or adolescent’s mental health needs.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for conduct disorder at Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems in Lafayette, LA

Experts believe that those with a lack of treatment or who go without proper treatment for conduct disorder are a greater risk of continued or worsening behavioral and emotional problems that could carry on into adulthood. Some possible effects of the disorder that could occur down the line are: inability to maintain employment, retain healthy relationships, refrain from criminal activity, avoid risk-taking behaviors, or abstain from drug or alcohol abuse. And while the recovery progress can be long, there is help available and possibility for positive change.

One of the most successful types of treatment for conduct disorder is inpatient care. This intensive environment is one that can allow your teen or adolescent to work through his or her behavioral and emotional difficulties in a safe and helpful place. Through therapy, groups, and other types of interventions, teens and adolescents can learn new ways of managing their behavior and emotions, while understanding how to appropriately express themselves in everyday situations. Lastly, inpatient treatment also affords parents the opportunity to learn new parenting techniques that will help assist their teen or adolescent in leading a happy and productive life outside of treatment.

Types of Treatment

Upon arrival at Vermilion’s treatment rehab, all patients take part in a free, confidential level of care screening by one of our Assessment and Referral Specialists. After gathering all necessary information, the Assessment and Referral Specialist will review the evaluation with one of our psychiatrists. The psychiatrist will then recommend the appropriate level of care to meet the patient’s needs.

At Vermilion, we believe in the power of using Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) as our main approach to treatment. We have found that this therapeutic model is suited for treating both acute and short-term lengths of stay due to its effectiveness in working quickly by focusing on skill-building, as well as by identifying and disputing irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions. By implementing this REBT approach to treatment, the therapeutic interventions that are incorporated in our inpatient services include the following:

Detoxification: For those adolescents and adults who come to us struggling with substance use concerns, we provide a fully-monitored medical detox service. As part of the 12-step model of recovery, we implement the idea of “rational recovery,” designed to provide patients with recovery skills that can last a lifetime and prevent relapse.

Medication management: If a patient requires medication to aid in the alleviation or reduction of symptoms associated with a mental health condition, one of our psychiatrists may recommend medication as part of the patient’s treatment plan. Supervised by our experienced medical staff, patients on medication meet regularly with the psychiatrist so as to ensure that needs are met.

Group therapy: Group therapy is the main component of treatment at our inpatient treatment clinic. Various groups are held on a daily basis and may include discussions on:

  • Holistic wellness
  • Relapse prevention
  • Goal-setting
  • Problem-solving
  • Anger management and conflict resolution
  • Mental illness education
  • Medication education
  • Healthy relationships, including developing effective communication skills and appropriate boundaries

Individual therapy: Individual counseling sessions are held on an as-needed basis and provide patients with time to meet alone with their therapist in order to discuss any concerns they have and to reflect on goals that have been reached.

Family therapy: We believe that positive changes are initiated through the family unit as a whole, which is why we strongly encourage our patients’ family members to actively participate in the therapeutic process. Family sessions are designed to address issues that affect the entire family and begin the process of identifying solutions. We also offer parents and caregivers education on mental illness, substance abuse, and medication management so that they can effectively help their loved one.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): This form of therapy is designed to help people create a rich and meaningful life, while developing the skills needed to effectively handle the pain and stress that comes with life’s experiences.

In order to provide a fully comprehensive therapeutic experience, Vermilion also provides the following:

  • Expressive therapies
  • Recreation therapy
  • Experiential therapies
Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for conduct disorder

At Vermilion’s treatment rehab in Lafayette, we believe that thorough planning is critical to ensuring a patient is discharged into the most supportive environment possible. In doing so, we are able to promote a positive continuity of care and quality of life, maximize stabilization, and minimize the need for re-hospitalization. Our social services staff works with each patient’s treatment team to develop a discharge plan based on the patient’s needs, resources, preferences, family involvement, location of residence, and community resources. With patient consent, this plan is then passed on to the designated discharge planner who initiates referrals, schedules appointments, and finalizes any other necessary arrangements.

In addition to our inpatient services, Vermilion’s mental health center also provides services through our Visions outpatient program. Visions provides various levels of care for adults, including:

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP): These programs meet five days a week from 9:00am-3:00pm, with a typical length of stay being six weeks. During this time, patients are provided with four daily group therapy sessions, individual and family sessions as needed, and psychiatric care.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP): These programs meet for six hours per day, and the amount of days that each patient attends every week is determined by his or her specific needs. IOPs are designed to equip individuals with the tools needed to develop coping skills which will enable them to handle their daily stressors in a productive and healthy manner.
