ADHD Treatment

Learn about ADHD

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD, is a mental health condition that affects many adults. With the two main components of the disorder being inattentiveness and excessive hyperactivity, those with ADHD often struggle to maintain focus, stay on task, be organized, and control impulses. These symptoms can make functioning in a number of settings exceedingly difficult and people with this mental condition often report significant impairment at school, work, and with interpersonal relationships. If left untreated, people with ADHD are at an increased risk for substance use, academic failure, unemployment, family conflict, development of other mental illnesses, and detrimental consequences as a result of engaging in risky behaviors. However, treatment for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder has improved the lives of those struggling with these symptoms. The combination of therapeutic interventions and medication often shows a reduction in symptoms that cause impairment and can improve the overall quality of life for sufferers.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for ADHD at Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems in Lafayette, LA

Untreated symptoms of ADHD can cause a number of obstacles for a person on a daily basis. Completing mundane tasks may feel overwhelming, performing well in school could be a challenge, and maintaining good occupational functioning could feel like one is swimming against a powerful current. Moreover, relationships may begin to suffer as it can become difficult to maintain healthy relationships as symptoms become more intrusive. If you are finding that you or a loved one is struggling with these kinds of symptoms and problems, it may be time to seek treatment.

Because the symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder can cause a number of serious effects, inpatient treatment can be the best option for some people. Inpatient care allows an individual to fully immerse him or herself in the therapeutic process while receiving ongoing support from qualified professionals. Additionally, inpatient staff have the ability to assist with any emotional or behavioral issues that could arise. Furthermore, ADHD sufferers can gain a better understanding of his or her condition and receive treatment for any co-occurring mental illnesses or substance use concerns. Medication may be appropriate for some people with ADHD, and it is in inpatient care that a person can really explore medication options, as psychiatrists are available on an ongoing basis. All of these factors are what make inpatient treatment one of the best choices for treating a person suffering from ADHD. It is there that the sufferer can achieve and learn to maintain successful recovery and go on to live a fruitful life.

Types of Treatment

Types of ADHD treatment offered at Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems in Lafayette, LA

Upon first arriving at Vermilion, all patients take part in a free, confidential level of care screening by one of our Assessment and Referral Specialists. Once information is gathered, the A&R Specialist will review the evaluation with one of our psychiatrists. It is then that a recommendation for level of care needed is decided based on the needs of each patient.

At Vermilion’s psychiatric treatment rehab, we believe in the power of using Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) as our main approach to treatment. We have found that this therapeutic model is suited for treating both acute and short-term lengths of stay due to its effectiveness in working quickly by focusing on skill-building, as well as by identifying and disputing irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions. By implementing this REBT approach to treatment, the therapeutic interventions that are incorporated at our inpatient behavioral health clinic include the following:

Detoxification: For individuals struggling with chemical dependency, we provide medically supervised detox services. As part of the 12-step model of recovery, we implement the idea of “rational recovery,” designed to provide patients with recovery skills that can last a lifetime and prevent future struggles with addiction.

Medication management: Patients may receive medication in order to treat any symptoms they are experiencing. Meetings with a psychiatrist occur on a regular basis in order to monitor the effectiveness of any medication that is prescribed and to make any necessary changes.

Group therapy: Group therapy is the main component of treatment at our inpatient treatment rehab. Various groups are held on a daily basis and may include discussions on:

  • Goal-setting
  • Problem-solving
  • Medication education
  • Holistic wellness
  • Mental illness education
  • Anger management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Healthy relationships
  • Effective communication skills
  • Appropriate boundaries
  • Relapse prevention

Individual therapy: Individual counseling sessions are held on an as-needed basis and provide patients with time to meet alone with their therapist in order to discuss any questions they have and to reflect on goals that have been reached.

Family therapy: We believe that positive changes are initiated through the family unit as a whole, which is why we strongly encourage our patients’ family members to actively participate in the therapeutic process. Family sessions are designed to address issues that affect the entire family and begin the process of identifying solutions. We also offer parents and caregivers education on mental illness, substance abuse, and medication management so that they can effectively help their loved one.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): This form of therapy is designed to help people create a rich and meaningful life, while developing the skills needed to effectively handle the pain and stress that comes with life’s experiences.

In order to provide a fully comprehensive therapeutic experience, Vermilion also provides the following:

  • Experiential therapies
  • Expressive therapies
  • Recreation therapy

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for ADHD

At Vermilion’s mental health clinic in Lafayette, LA, we believe that thorough treatment planning is critical to ensuring a patient is discharged into the most supportive environment possible. In doing so, we are able to promote a positive continuity of care and quality of life, maximize stabilization, and minimize the need for re-hospitalization. Our social services staff works with each patient’s treatment team to develop a discharge plan based on the patient’s needs, resources, preferences, family involvement, location of residence, and community resources. With patient consent, this plan is then passed on to the designated discharge planner who initiates referrals, schedules appointments, and finalizes any other necessary arrangements.

If you are in need of care that is truly exceptional and treatment that will offer hope for a better future, look no further than Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems. We are here to help.
