How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for prescription drug addiction

If your loved one or family member is abusing prescription drugs, you already know just how troubling his or her behavior can be. You may feel overwhelmed by how the addiction has impacted both your life and the life of your loved one, possibly causing you to feel like you cannot talk to him or her about your concerns. Despite the intimidation that having this type of conversation may cause, please know that opening up a dialogue with your loved one is imperative.

As you prepare to confront your loved one, consider the following:

  • Research common signs, symptoms, and effects of prescription drug addiction. As you gather information, you can better understand what your loved one is experiencing.
  • Locate treatment centers in your loved one’s area that provide care that is specifically designed to treat prescription drug addiction. Consider both inpatient and outpatient options based on your loved one’s needs.
  • Talk to your loved one about your concerns regarding his or her well-being. Speak in a nonjudgmental tone so that he or she does not feel threatened. It is likely that he or she will become defensive, and possibly angry, but remain calm and stress the importance of getting help. Share the information you have collected regarding treatment options.
  • If your loved one makes the decision to receive treatment, let him or her know that you will be there to continually offer your support.

Types of Treatment

Types of prescription drug addiction treatment offered at Behavioral Health Systems in Lafayette, LA

Upon first arriving at Vermilion Behavioral Health System, all patients take part in a free, confidential level of care screening by one of our Assessment and Referral Specialists. After gathering all pertinent information, the A&R Specialist will review the evaluation with one of our psychiatrists, who will then recommend the level of care that is best suited to meet the patient’s needs.

At Vermilion, we believe in the power of using rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) as our main approach to treatment. We have found this therapeutic model to be successful in treating both acute and short-term lengths of stay due to its effectiveness in working quickly by focusing on skill-building, and by identifying and disputing irrational beliefs and cognitive distortions. By implementing this REBT approach to treatment, the therapeutic interventions that are incorporated into our inpatient programs include the following:

Detoxification: For adults who come to us dealing with an addiction to prescription drugs, we provide a fully monitored medical detox program. As part of the 12-Step model of recovery, we implement the idea of “rational recovery,” designed to provide individuals with recovery skills that can last a lifetime, preventing future struggles with addiction.

Medication management: Patients who are suffering from a co-occurring disorder in addition to their prescription drug addiction may receive medication in order to treat any symptoms they are experiencing. Meetings with a psychiatrist occur on a regular basis in order to monitor the effectiveness of any medication that is prescribed and to make any necessary changes.

Group therapy: Group therapy is the main component of treatment for prescription drug addiction in our inpatient program. Various groups are held on a daily basis and may include discussions on:

  • Relapse prevention
  • Goal-setting
  • Mental illness education
  • Medication education
  • Problem-solving
  • Healthy relationships, including developing effective communication skills and appropriate boundaries
  • Holistic wellness
  • Anger management and conflict resolution

Individual therapy: Individual counseling sessions are held on an as-needed basis and provide patients with time to meet alone with their therapist in order to discuss any concerns they have.

Family therapy: We believe that positive changes are initiated through the family unit as a whole, so we strongly encourage our patients’ family members to actively participate in the therapeutic process. Family sessions are designed to address issues that affect the entire family, and to begin the process of identifying solutions.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): This form of therapy is designed to help people create a rich and meaningful life, while developing the skills needed to effectively handle the pain and stress that come with life’s experiences.

In order to provide a fully comprehensive therapeutic experience, Vermilion also provides the following:

  • Recreation therapy
  • Experiential therapies
  • Expressive therapies

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for prescription drug addiction

At Vermilion Behavioral Health System, we believe that thorough planning is critical to ensuring that a patient is discharged into the most supportive environment possible after his or her inpatient stay for prescription drug addiction treatment. By doing so, we are able to promote a positive continuity of care, maximize stabilization, and minimize the need for re-hospitalization. Our social services staff works with each patient’s treatment team to develop a discharge plan based on his or her needs, resources, preferences, family involvement, location of residence, and available community resources. With patient consent, this plan is then passed on to the designated discharge planner, who initiates referrals, schedules appointments, and finalizes any other necessary arrangements.

In addition to our inpatient programs, Vermilion also provides services through our Visions outpatient program. Visions provides various levels of care for adults, including:

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP): These programs meet five days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with a typical length of stay being six weeks. During this time, patients are provided with four daily group therapy sessions, individual and family sessions as needed, and psychiatric care.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP): These programs meet for six hours per day, and the amount of days that each patient attends every week is determined by his or her specific needs. IOPs are designed to equip individuals with the tools needed to develop coping skills that will enable them to handle their daily stressors in a productive and healthy manner. In order to better accommodate various schedules, Vermilion also offers evening IOPs.

Traditional outpatient: Traditional outpatient services are provided for individuals ages 4 and up, and provide therapy sessions, psychiatric services, and medication management.

Whatever your needs may be, the staff at Vermilion Behavioral Health System will do everything in their power to get you back on the road to a happy, healthy life, free from an addiction to prescription drugs.
